So I've been listening to the star wars radio drama the bbc did back in the '80s and I love 'em! Got to thinking: is anyone down to do a plot audio drama like a book on tape? We've all got microphones and with some sound editing, sound effects, and music spliced in, we could really do something amazing. Many/most sound effects could come from video games and it isn't too hard to do overall.

we could use an existing plot or writea whole new one.

anyone?

There was talk of trying this at one point, but it never got off the drawing board.

If there is a concrete time to try and fit this into my schedule, I would LOVE to do it! Face and I did a reading once a a plot we co-wrote, and it was awesome. Imagine how much better with ALL of us doing our parts!

Ah, yes, a Plot radio drama. There has been talk of this. One of the ideas was to see how Plot 16 goes and see how well it would fit into one.

Indeed. That's part of the reason that only Player Characters are to be used. Guest characters (like Ziggy, Leia or random thugs) we can do ourselves, but to do a full "Wedge" voice for an entire plot is a lot harder.

But I'm still totally up for a radio drama!

I'm totally up for this. Granted, I don't know how to use any of this Mac sound editing software worth a lick, but I think I can manage to record myself and send it in. Failing that, I can send in Audacity files with my low-end PC mic.

Bring on the radio drama!

... though I should probably mention: I don't think I'll be able to provide the voice of Leia.

We just need to write a script, agree on it, assign parts where needed (baddies, wedge, etc) and then "perform" it via skype. All the editing is done in post - sound effects, music, narration, etc. a couple parts will probably have to be redone but w/e.

I thought of this before...

Skype isn't the best package to use to record voices, but it'll be great as an acting tool. For example, Face is having a conversation with Az, so I set up a recording function on my computer, as does Az. We then 'act' the conversation, each recording our side of it, and send the final copies (of each side of the conversation) to one person, to edit them fluidly together...

Which begs the next question. Do we need to assign roles for people like Directors, Producers, editors etc?

You could contact the folks who do the 501st pod cast.
http://www.501st.com/podcast
I think they have done stuff like dramatized fanfiction
They might be interested in helping you produce it,
and of course, broadcast it to a far wider audience
than our rag-tag band of irregulars.

FYI

I have an 'in' with 501st podcast 'content developer' Nicky Blum.
She is the 2nd in command of my local NY state 501st group
'Garrison Excelsior' and she loves my R2.

Tell her 'jonny5 sent you'.

Also I've been looking for voice work.

Everyone recording their roles separately is asking for wooden acting and an editor's nightmare. It isn't difficult to get a sound recorder that records everything going through one's soundcard, which would enable us to simply converse and record. I'm not saying we *should* use skype, just that doing it all individually is a terrible idea. Its gotta be all at once, interaction is everything.

Script is first and definitely the most important. Remember, its radio so no narrating. MAYBE a voiceover now and then in between 'chapters' or something, but not much. All narration and descriptions have to be in the form of dialogue and asides. After a script is done we can do the initial reading, assign other roles, do sfx and soundtrack, etc. We should do a plotstorm online tomorrow or sunday. What's good for everyone? I have no life so any time is good for me :p

Sunday works better, although no guarantee that'll occur for me (big final project due Tuesday, so the drafting lab owns my soul)

Weekends would be extremely awkward for me if my family saw me shouting "Rogue Three, break to port!" at the computer... it would likely result in my being sent to an institution where the nice men in white coats call me "special" again.

Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays work for me, from about 3:45-5:00 PM

I think it'd be best to adapt an already written piece. Something by the book, in and out, clear beginning middle and end. An original piece from the plot, maybe an adaptation from a book, or some existing fanfic perhaps? If we took something already done it would eliminate a large portion of the work obviously, all it would need is a good adaptation to audio performance.

The downside to this is that a large portion of the plot is based in action. For, say, a dogfight, you can only have so many "Peew, peew, peew!" noises and scuffle sounds- you have to see something like that for it to be effective.

... Then again, if Piggy is based heavily enough on the Allston Piggy, we could probably get away with some of his flight control commentary. IE: "Rogue Three, break to port now. Rogues five and six, fire upon targets of opportunity, then angle thirteen degrees from your current path and..." etc.

You just have to be creative! Much more 'talking to yourself' or comments amongst pilots. You should check out the bbc radio drama for some inspiration, they do it really well. Instead of passive narration, you have a pilot say what's going on to himself or a wingman, or the bridge officer updating to an onlooker, or have an R2 unit buzz and beep and then reply "I know artoo, that torpedo just took out three ties at once! wow!"

stuff like that.

We'd definitely want to base it on the Plot, since it's our literature and the only thing we'd be motivated enough to do a radio drama on. As far as extended actions scenes go, we can always shorten those and concentrate on witty dialogue and humor.

Hehe, though what would be cool too is to someday have the Plot as a book on tape (downloadable mp3s) with writers reading their own work when possible. Awesome and much more convenient way to catch up on the Plot, although an enormous amount of work to pull off. The poor man's alternative would be for one person to purchase decent natural voice reader software (far beyond Microsoft Sam) and record the reading of the Plot for downloadable mp3s. Quite easy to do. Just grab the text when there's a new story posted, toss it into the reader, and hit record. Then it'd be uploaded with links in Plotpedia. And it'd be better than a text summary of each story.

<ponders doing that>

I say we do plot 1A :D Definitely the best, and one we all know very well. We'd just have to rewrite it for audio, edit a bit (a lot) and voila.

See, Plot 1a is, in all honesty, a pretty crap story! There's no real flow, everyone's all over the place, and the characters are all still being developed. PLUS only a few of us were actually THERE in the beginning!

Plot 16a is probably a good place to start. Only got "actual" people in it, and we've developed enough as writers to actually have character depth!

On my account, at least, don't worry too much about exclusion based on an older plot. I can't speak for Theran, but if you go with an earlier plot, from when some members who aren't here today were still around, I'd be happy to provide voice work for somebody else. Heck, apparently some Taz writing is in my blood, so I may as well go with him if we go with an earlier plot.

Well, let's brainstorm. There should be a ground battle and a space battle. What else?

We could start out with something small (was thinking the opening of 17 but then realized we have no voice fro Brya) as a "draft" attempt before trying something grand.

What we need, is a quick, 15 page script, incorporating all the people who want to lend a voice (I'm sure I could manage at least a couple of characters!), with some traditional RS action.

So, I'm thinking jump straight in with a space battle... have the Sacul and Rogues fly to a place. The Wraiths disembark and go groundside, whilst the Rogues clear up. Then the Rogues join the Wraiths dirtside for the final battle. Or is this too long?

Hm, covering both the ground a sky battle might be a bit long, but at the same time it is the only way to get both groups covered well - also, I assume that this would only be with active characters? If we tried to cover EVERYONE that might get long, but if it was just part of each group working on a special mission, it seems more feasible to me that way.

PS - I know I have been a bit MIA and not following this particular line too much, but TOTALLY on board! :D

1) Do we have a set list of people seriously committed to this?
2) Do we have any idea about a plot?

1) Not sure.
2) Thing a quick briefing room scene, followed by a space fight then ground battle. Total standalone plot, set wherever/whenever we want.

We can get other folks to fill in roles. Guessing Chris (Hayley's friend) is an actor, my sis will probably be up for it. Possibly convince Cathy too!
