Why yes. Yes, it is. But I've claimed it, now. Benny Hill may not retain it so long as I lay my claim upon it! Bwahahahaha- *Someone informs Az that it isn't public domain* -er.... dang.

Alright, fine. You win this round lawsuiters.... but I'm still calling it my theme song!

I know how to cure you of your love for this song by putting it in a SW context.

I bought a radar gun the other day to clock my serve just for fun. I can't wait to bust this thing out on the highway during a road trip just to see how many people stomp on the brakes :D

This actual makes the battle almost watchable for me.
I wish it could be inserted into the phantom edit.

Now you just need to drive around wearing a mustache, and mirrored sunglasses in a white Crown Vic.

That music and the speed shift show that battle for what it really is.

I applaud you, Piggy. ;)

Hehehehehehe

It's sad that it works so perfectly. Lucas should have done that instead so at least we'd know he wasn't expecting us to actually take that battle seriously. Heck, the whole movie for that matter.

Yakety Sax makes Everything better. Probably not a good idea to view this if there are squeamish folk around- it's a tad violent.

I somehow just got elected as the Assistant Collegiate Province Representative to my music fraternity...I have no idea what that means except that I will be attending a national convention in Orlando in July 2009.

In other news, Music Therapy is an awesome profession, just in case you were wondering :D

Oh, and grad school? Even more awesome.

lol- I believe that traumps a few of my leadership positions in terms of prestige and, you know, legitimacy. All the same, I won't let it stop me from putting "Messiah of Zen Club" on my college applications. I attended the first meeting, was given my position, and promised to go up on crosses as needed should Romans attempt to break the Zen Club up... I've not attended since, seeing as they didn't like my suggestions about playing dodgeball with rocks from the rock garden. (That's actually a true story)

Hales - I am envious of your good grad school time. I am LOVING what I am learning at the moment for my program...but the process for this first semester is a whole other monster.

It's a lot of work, Red, believe me, which is the primary reason I've been plotting and posting so little. I'm just enjoying everything I'm learning. MT is just a really interesting field.

As is Nautical Archaeology! Sadly, the location leaves something to be desired *coughCollegeStationTXcough* But if I can get my ship drafting project done and over with, it'll be getting better.

Plus, I get a month long winter break! I missed that back in the real world...

Definitely misread that as "Nautical Astronomy" at first. I was about to ask how you spotted star-fish, or whatever it was Nautical Astronomers did for a living. Incidentally, I think I've finally determined how to reply to all of that college mail I've been getting from some of the local schools....

Nautical Astronomy is a 1st year prerequisite for the Imperial Academy's undergraduate degree in Astral Navigation. Mostly historical in scope it examines the development of tri-dimensional navigation in warp space. Chapter one in the text is titled: 'Zephram Cockran'.

Snowboarding hurts. Ouch. But the more brain cells you kill from eating it on icy slopes, the more it makes you want to get right back up there and do it again.

Snowboarding is a blast! I compared it to crack- you realize that it's slowly destroying your body, but by the same token, there's no way that you're quitting it short of a massive burst of willpower that is beyond most humans.

Where are you learning to board? I had the pleasure of learning out in Montana (Big Sky) where there were great conditions.

I rode at Tamarack and Brundage, a couple hours north of here. There's a much closer resort right above Boise, but it doesn't get that much snowfall, so it's really hit-and-miss.

Seen pictures of Big Sky. That's one crazy big resort. Closest thing we have to that in Idaho is Sun Valley. I've been told, though, that Whistler up in Canada is the ultimate snowboarding place.

In preparation for college letters coming back:

Admissions Board
College of Choice
Address
College Hill, State

Dear Professor,

Thank you for your letter of March 1. After careful consideration, I
regret to inform you that I am unable to accept your refusal to offer me
an undergraduate admission in your department.

This year I have been particularly fortunate in receiving an unusually
large number of rejection letters. With such a varied and promising field
of candidates, it is impossible for me to accept all refusals.

Despite College's outstanding qualifications and previous experience in
rejecting applicants, I find that your rejection does not meet my needs at
this time. Therefore, I will begin attendance in your department this August.
I look forward to seeing you then.

Best of luck in rejecting future applicants.

Sincerely,
Azazel

I wish I could take the credit for having created that, but it's a rather old joke, stretching back at least six years to when my oldest sister was applying to college.

The department heads I referenced above are definitely too out of touch with popular reality to realize that.

Do you think it would work for teacher's training?

Good old Superbowl commercials. If you haven't seen Castaway one of these won't make any sense to you, but the rest should.

Edit: My bad. I totally posted the wrong link there. All the same, it's an interesting little historical webcomic.

Are you by any chance making a reference to a
web comic (the name of which escapes me) about a couple who play RPG's?

Piggy: No, I am making a reference to my life and ambitions (pushed back another year). However, I'd be interested in seeing this webcomic of my life, if you can find it!!

... So I watched Clint Eastwood in Gran Turino (sp?) today. I walked in expecting an enjoyable, if stupid, shoot 'em up-style movie, and was pleasantly surprised when it was anything but. I think there are a grand total of three scenes where any guns are even fired. The movie features a large use of the F-word, as well as some politically incorrect name-calling, but it winds up being a lot more than that, as I said. Eastwood plays Walter Kowalski, an old man recently widowered (or whatever the masculine verb of "widowed" is). He fought in the Korean War, and is still haunted by the memories of what he had to do in the war.

One of the better lines in the movie comes when he's talking to a priest.
Priest: It can be hard, dealing with the terrible things that you were ordered to do in war.
Walt: Yeah... but you know what really gets to you? It's the things you weren't ordered to do. Those are the ones that haunt you.

He lives next-door to a Hmung (sp?) family, from Indo-China. Among the household are Sue and her younger brother Tao. Sue is smart and quick with her mouth, while Tao is also smart, but very quiet, and not very capable of standing up for himself. Their cousin, Spider, is a member of a local Hmung gang, and is constantly trying to rope Tao into it. He tells Tao that for his initiation, Tao must steal Walt's 1972 Gran Turino. Tao fails in his task, alerting Walt of his presence, and is threatened at gunpoint with an old rifle left over from Walt's time in Korea.

Tao winds up going to work for Walt to "pay off his family's debt" to the man. I'll leave the rest of the movie to you to see/to look up on Wikipedia. Even knowing the full plot in advance (I checked Wikipedia out before seeing the movie) I loved it.

To quote my friend, "Clint Eastwood puts the 'ass' in.... no, he puts the 'bad' in... screw it- Clint Eastwood puts the full 'badass' in 'badass!'"

The ultimate theme is one of peace, and it doesn't end the way you might expect an Eastwood film to end.

Out of curiosity, did anyone watch the Battlestar Galactica Season 4.5 Premiere today? Any thoughts/opinions/huge-fans (like myself?) out there?

I'm up to the end of Season 3... so if anyone spoils anything, then I might be forced to hunt them down, and make them watch Jar Jar scenes 24 hours a day until the commit suicide.

I just got a chance to watch it today, and all I have to say is "Well the what the frak is Kara?!?" I don't think that's more than Faceman's delicate anti-spoiler sensibilities can handle. ;)

Highly amusing, if there are a number of "wangstas" in your area, or even if there aren't any.

After much consideration I have determined
that it is possible to staple a cat to you own nose.

Since there appears to be a board drought, I thought I'd better post something! It was driving me nuts clicking on the board everyday, and seeing no new posts!

So here is one.

And, to make it nice and random...

Have you noticed, that you can put 'ed at the end of pretty much any noun, and use it in a particular way, and you can use it to mean drunk. For example.

Quote:
I was completely rhubarbed last night!

or
Quote:
Did you see Wedge, he was totally paperclipped on that Elba Beer

Or is it just a British thing?

I think the -ed ending is a factor, but its the TONE of how such a statement is said/perceived (read) that really I think gives it the power to be seen as an euphemism/analogy for being drunk, especially since so many of the common analogies are already structured that way:

Buzzed, wasted, trashed, etc...

Short answer: No, its not just a British thing.

:P

Kai,
It took me forever to re-find this (due to an unrequested cookie purge) as it ended shortly before I first located it, and is no longer as high ranking in the search engines, but the web comic I was thinking of is called Home on the Strange

[Warning!] This web comic runs a bit towards the PG-13 end of things and the first few episodes don't deal with gaming at all. [/end of Warning!]

If that doesn't send most of your running to check it out nothing will.

Please note I'm deliberately starting the link on page 6 so that you encounter the characters in a game related discussion rather than the authors misguided attempt at backstory.

Enjoy

Boo for spring break being over.

What did I accomplish during my time off? Went snowboarding for the first time, and I've written 1 and a half songs. To be honest, I can't remember the last time I've been so creative. :D

If I get a working mic again any time soon I'll record the finished song at least and put it up for all to hear.

This is my "productivity." A (craptastic) remake of a trailer for The Dark Knight in Latin for my Latin III class. I play the Joker.

Sounds like an awesomely productive spring break, Hales. What'd you think of snowboarding? Has your battered and bruised body forgiven you yet?

And, yes, Az has never made it a secret that he seriously needs help  Love the batmobile scene.

Haha- we're under no false impressions that it was good at all. The batmobile scene literally features me on my mic going "Kaboom-bam kablooey, wham, screeeech!"

Cloverfieldus is even worse (the whole things consists of us yelling "Oh my gods" and "run!" in Latin, while shaky-cam fleeing... from a crocodile puppet), though our current project, Monty Python's Quest for the Holy Grail, is going a bit better. Sum Arturius, rex Brittani!

Where can I find Haley's Rogue Squadron songs? I'm sure they'd be very entertaining....

Unfortunately, the spontaneous event wasn't videographed. Only photographed: http://picasaweb.google.com/eralitydotc ... 6646477394

But I'm sure Halley singing exists on YouTube somewhere. It must.

This video has me singing on it for about 2 seconds...haha. I surprisingly have nothing of me singing up on the interscape.

And GH, snowboarding was great! My tailbone still hurts ever so slightly if I sit down funny though.

My roommate has promised to bring a working mic with her when she gets back from visiting her parents. Hopefully I can get those songs recorded for posterity soon!

So...I tried uploading the songs I've been writing but the board doesn't allow mp3 files.

Any suggestions of places where I can upload stuff and post the links here for all to listen to?

And if anyone wants to hear them, just IM or e-mail me and I'll send the files your way. I've written 3 and want to do 2 for my fraternity's upcoming recital but I can't decide which ones. Any advice would be appreciated :D

Bowman was nice enough to provide me with a link for uploading the files. Thank you kindly, sir!

The songs are listed in the order that I wrote them, though that really has nothing to do with anything :D

Oh My Love

Santa Cruz

Phoenix From the Ashes

Aaaaaaand some more tomfoolery in Latin class. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zZoCrbfNscY

This is Monty Python, done as well as we could and as poorly as anyone can imagine. For the record: The Black Knight helm is made of a trashcan, some cardboard, and an old cross. Pretty dang impressive.

And, Az, I posted my comments to your atrocity on YouTube.

Crikey!

I've been elected to hold the position of Fraternity Education Officer for my music frat next year. I get to teach all the younglings about our wonderful organization and make sure they turn into upstanding, responsible collegiate brothers. The education and well being of the entire 2010 pledge class rests in my hands...

No pressure :P

Congratulations. People don't trust me with their children for some odd reason. Nine times out of ten the things come back doing just fine! And if they don't, I replace the lost property with one of equal or greater value. Or a DVD player. Can't beat a DVD player. :P

Seriously, congrats, Hales. I'm sure you'll do fine. Most kids are bound to know what they're doing by the time they get to... er... whatever college it is you attend. Those musical types generally have to have more discipline than us non-musical folk, so your job will probably be guiding them as much as anything else, right? Be sure to keep us updated on how it's going. List some problem students and we can send a strike team in to alleviate tensions.

Haha, nice comparison, GH. I hadn't thought of it that way. I have noticed things I write in the plot tend to happen in real life eventually, but I doubt that would work should I be conscious of it as I'm writing

Az: I got to University of the Pacific in Stockton, CA. As for discipline, I couldn't really say. The class this year was particularly responsible, but the class of 2005 (the class preceding mine) were a bunch of misfits while they were pledging. Almost all of them turned out perfectly fine though. And you're right, I don't have much to worry about. It's responsibility I can handle for sure. It's just nice to know enough people in my fraternity felt I could handle it too.

And don't worry, should any of the pledges turn out to be problems next year, you'll all be the first to know. We can get into "aggressive negotiations" with them to shape up.

I think the driving force is the fact that most of us model our characters after ourselves. They're like older, cooler, more skilled, and more experienced versions of ourselves. And as we get older and accomplish more in life, we get closer to those personas. And if we were to be placed in a similar situation as our Plot characters (like serving in the military during World War 3), we might find even more cases where life seems to imitate Plot.

Or we might just run away screaming at the first sign of trouble, then subsequently have our Plot characters cast themselves off the nearest cliff for the shame of it all.

I think we discussed this same thing before, but that's okay!

Its an even neater convo this go around.

I think Its one of those scenarios where we definitely amplify existing qualities and idealize, but that isn't a bad thing. :)

I also think most people on this board could handle things similar to plot if it did appear in life, from my general impression of personalities.

And I agree Hales, being aware of the mimicking would probably make it awkward to write. Its much better to let our egos and imaginations have that one under control.

I have faith that any red blooded R/WS'er would plow forward if for no other reason than to accumulate new plot ideas. Run away screaming? Hah! When you look into the abyss, the abyss also looks into you - like a plot waiting to happen.

Currently in the middle of a Magnum PI marathon. Thinking of starting a petition for Tom Selleck's mustache to be inducted onto the Walk of Fame along with Roger Moore's eyebrow and William Shatner's toupee.

I enjoyed it, as well, though I managed to catch an earlier showing and so got more sleep than Ran. ;) Once it's less spoil-ish, I'd be interested to hear what you thought about it, Ran.

So I finally saw it last night. It was REALLY good. I'm quite pleased with it, but for some reason it just didn't feel at all like a Star Trek movie. It simply felt more like a really impressive sci-fi movie with familiar names. I think the biggest thing that contributed to that feeling for me was the music. There was nothing Star Trek about it until the end credits, though I was quite impressed with how catchy the music actually was.

I think Halley's about got the right of it. Also, Halley, it's pretty clear that the director felt the same about the music as you do... I like it, but I think he might have ridden that main theme a couple too many times.

I'd have liked the music better if I came away remembering more than two big strains. :)

My thoughts on the new Star Trek movie: Why couldn't Star Wars prequels have been created with such perfection?

And, on a completely different note, oh my god way to make me lust after Zachary Quinto even more than I was doing so before.

I have finally caught up on reading all the Downtime posts that have happened since I kinda disappeared from the board in like October! Now to catch up on all the other posts...this could take while...

ST was an excellent film but I wanted to shoot the DP for the overuse of shaky cam and strangle the effects person for the overuse of lens flares.

Heh, some joker has edited the episode page for CSI on Wikipedia. Apparently Season 9 is now CSI Langston: Season One and all the episode names have Langston in them.

Anyway, Star Trek, I've just seen it and I thought it was very, very good. I especially like the idea of Nero and Spock's journey to the past creating an alternate universe, thus allowing them to rewrite canon without actually enraging the fans to the murderous rage.

Wow... so I'm officially the only person who saw Star Trek and wasn't wowed off their seat by it? Cool.

I thought it was very pretty, and the human side of the plot was done well, but I was really looking for a much stronger plot than the one they presented; I think my rudimentary knowledge of astrophysics ruined most of it for me, seeing as I was constantly being shushed for crying, "But that's not how a black hole works!"

Aaaarrrggggghhhhhhh!!!!!!!!

Ghostbusters:The video Game is released today and it's on Steam, but I can't get it cause I live in the UK and Sony picked up the Europe release and decided to get one over on Microsoft and shore up their European market by only releasing it on their own platforms for the time being.

But I see it there on Steam with the message that it's unavailiable for my region, but the update window just popped up advertising it to tease me!!

Gaaahhhhhh!!!!!!

And importing it from the US where the multiplatform release was normal is too expensive for me at the moment!1

I found a video game for the Gamecube for $7 yesterday. It's a top rated game that they could easily have charged upwards of $20 and people still would have paid for it. Needless to say I bought it on the spot. It was quite a steal.
